Never Been Kissed...

On this day 11 years ago, Dean and I went on our very first date together. He had asked me to see a movie with him, and I reluctantly agreed. I say that because although we were acquaintances in high school, we had never really hung out together, so the thought of going on a one-on-one date with him terrified me. I barely knew the guy, and he did have sort of a "bad boy" reputation in high school. Still, as nervous as I was, something about him intrigued me, so I concocted a plan that would allow me to go on this date with a feeling of ease and calmness... I asked him if I could ask my best friend, Angie, to meet us at Kahala Mall to see the movie with us, and fortunately for me, he agreed. He offered to pick me up, so I gave him very detailed directions to my house. As I waited for him outside, my mind was racing... I didn't know what to expect. It was then that I saw the dark forest green BMW turn the corner from Bernice Street, heading straight for my house. My nerves calmed a bit as the BMW pulled next to the curb... it was a shining beauty with light tan leather interior. I guess I was expecting to ride in some kind of crazy Garth-Mobile from hell, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him behind the wheel of this stellar BMW. As I got in the car, I noticed he was wearing a dark blue beanie... I didn't get why he was wearing a beanie at the time, but I later found out that he wore it because of a bleach job gone bad... his hair was orange and he was embarrassed, so he had to cover up his bright orange hair with a beanie. I remember looking down in the car and seeing a pack of cigarettes near the astray... deal breaker... I couldn't date a smoker... but I later found out that the car was actually his Auntie's, and those were her cigarettes. Phew! As we rode to the mall together, I remember admiring his hands on the driving wheel... I thought he had really nice hands. It's a strange observation, but I remember thinking it. We met Angie at the Kahala Mall movie theaters, and saw Never Been Kissed starring Drew Barrymore. It was the perfect movie to see on a first date... funny, romantic & quirky... totally rufus! When the movie was over, I pulled Angie aside and thanked her for coming to my rescue, but she didn't have to stick around anymore. I was fine to finish my date with Dean one-on-one. After Angie left, Dean and I headed over to Bubbies for some ice cream. It was a cute first date... one that I will always remember like it were yesterday...
